Oh, I was turned on to this little gem about tentacle making by stellarvisionary!! Absolutely brilliant, I am aiming to do something like this, but the scale needs to be MUCH larger. YAY!!

I Love collaboration. In the end, If I am making a costume for ANYONE It goes though a ton of back-n-forth, idea sessions with other friends, and crafting parties! Plus my mom helps a lot (She taught me to sew, what can i say? lol)
So this week I was at a friends house, this will be her first convention of any kind, and we were bouncing Ideas off each other. She happens to have an older roommate who was a fashion designer in the 80’s who drank and hung out with us. (Robert C.) We went through what she needs for her Leeloo outfit, and then turn to the tentacle question with Ursala. Robert grabbed my note book, and just sketched this out for me! I kinda love it. It’s high fashion enough to get the tentacles right and is something I would have never come up with on my own. This kinds of things are one of the reasons I like to talk with people about what my projects are. Here is a guy who had NO IDEA what cosplay was even a week ago, but enough experience in the fashion world to sketch me something different and awesome in like 5 minutes. He of course played it down in true MN fashion (“oh, I haven’t done that in years! its just an idea”) but when it comes down to it I think its perfect for what I am doing <3 HoooRAY!

This costume took so long to make! When I decided to make this, I was thinking… its just a little purple and gold here and there… boy was I wrong! I found myself contemplating a lot before I went out and did it!

I put a thick layer of interface in the purple sleeves to create that gravity-defying look.

The head piece is made of two parts: The hair loops and the crown. The hair loops are made with the wire from clothes hangers and then Crayola air clay molded over it. After it dries, I painted it black (this is so it doesn’t show up white when I wrap the strands of the wig around it). I cut some parts of the back of the long black wig and wrapped it around the hair loops. The crown is made with flexible wire. I tied strings at the end of each wire. Crayola air clay smoothed out on it and made sure the strings were still hanging. When it dried, I painted with acrylic metallic gold paint. I bought gold beads and glued them in so that they wont slide around. The tassels are put in last.

I made the mistake by having them in two parts. If you want to make it easier on yourself. Make sure to have them as one. Make both parts separately, then secure them together on a head band and use hair pins to secure the head piece down.

So, I normally start out my designs with a planning page. I promise that it NEVER turns out the same as this first page, but it is always a great jumping off point. Even in hardcore cosplay (where you are tying to exactly re-create a costume) a page like this lets you start to get your ducks in a row and really see what you NEED to get your costume to the next level.
Here, its focused much more on her tentacles. Its a problem I’ve seen addressed in a few ways (Here and Here and Here) But With the more young and Metro look, I wanted to shorten her body and really get as much as I could from my legs and her tentacles. You can also see the list on the bottem left corner that addresses what else i need as well as thoughts on her shell necklace. I want to included it even though I am going for a per-Arial Ursala. First, its Iconic. Second, She seems so good at that bit of magic that it couldn’t have been the first time she used it on a poor unfortunate girl.

Let’s be honest, there’s been a ton of talk in the cosplay community recently about who we are, what that means, and how we need to be treated. My two cents? We’re all geeks, we’re all (mostly) people, and we ALL deserve to be treated as such. The only thing that is different is, we’re in costumes. And if you are not a geek, then why the frak are you doing it???

Yes! but slowly. Like light layers until you get to the gray you want. If you put too much in to begin with, you might end up looking like a dalmatian! also, combing it in with one of those cheep barbershop plastic combs will help it look more “real”. Good luck!

CONvergence 2012_ the costume begins

Last year I stretched myself so thin for this CON. I mean, 3 costumes for myself (2 very technical) One for my son and 2 for other friends was waaaaaay to much. I pulled most of them off, but without the help of my dear mother, a few tears, and a TON of safety pins, It would have never happened. This year I am simplifying, One costume for me (I have a back up for the other days) One for my son, and 3 costumes for my friends. (only one requires more than a few thrift store runs).

Right now it is time to focus on my costume. This years theme is wonder women so I’ve decided to channel my inner “big girl” diva and go as Ursala. Darling! Why? First, I shy away for doing anything “skinny girl” because it doesn’t fit my body type. (although, I will gladly dress a skinny girl!) Second, she is a wonder woman. I mean that’s her trade right? Helping all those poor unfortunate souls? Besides, shes EVIL in the most delicious diva way.

"don't underestimate the importance of "bo-dy lan-guage." Ha! "

THE WAVES OBEY MY EVERY WHIM!!

Although I love the drag queen-esque style and movement of Disney’s Ursala, (Based upon Divine!! Whom I love!) I feel like I want to play a “younger” evil version, Who is a bit slimmer (I’m still curvy, I just don’t want to add pounds for a costume, lol) I am thinking of an Ursala as she was before Triton banished her. Still power hungry, campy, but also, more metropolitan.
